You’ve made your reservation, and added a big “We Heart Yamba” note to your calendar… what now?
From surfing at world-famous beaches and exploring the beautiful Clarence River, to discovering local cafés, markets, fishing spots, and scenic coastal walks, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in Yamba. If you’re visiting for the first time, you probably have a few questions, like the best time to visit, where to eat, what beaches are safest for families, and what activities are worth adding to your itinerary. We’ve answered the most frequently asked questions so you can just rock up, chill out and make the most of your stay at The Sands Resort Yamba.
When's the best time of year to visit Yamba?
One of the best things about Yamba is that it’s a year-round destination. Summer is perfect for beach days, swimming, and family holidays, while autumn brings warm weather with fewer crowds. Winter in Yamba is mild and ideal for fishing, whale watching, and relaxing coastal walks, while spring is great for outdoor adventures and exploring the coastline before the busy season begins.
Here’s our seasonal guide you started.
Summer – 100% chance of sunshine and salty breezes. Perfect beach weather makes it ideal for swimming, surfing, and spending time outdoors. Top activities include surfing, paddle boarding, outdoor dining, coastal walks and being part of the Yamba holiday energy.
Autumn - The calm weather and quieter atmosphere make autumn one of the best times for couples and travellers wanting a more laid-back Yamba experience. The weather stays warm, the ocean is still perfect for swimming, and the crowds begin to ease after the busy summer season. It’s the ideal balance between beautiful weather and a more relaxed pace.
Winter - Winter in Yamba is mild compared to many parts of Australia, making it a popular escape for travellers looking to swap cold inland weather for sunshine and ocean air. While it may not always be swimming weather, winter brings some of the town’s most beautiful natural experiences including whale migration season.
Spring – Get the Yamba spring in your step. For many visitors, spring offers the perfect mix of sunshine, comfortable temperatures, and a quieter holiday atmosphere. The days become longer, the weather is comfortable, and outdoor activities are back in full swing before the busy summer season arrives. This is a great time to take on the Yuraygir Coastal Walk.
Where’s the best place to get famous Yamba seafood?
You can’t visit Yamba without trying the local seafood. From fresh prawns and oysters to classic fish and chips by the water, Yamba is known for some of the freshest seafood on the NSW North Coast. While our team can’t agree on one “best place”, we thought we should share a few options so you can choose what suits you!
Clarence Fisherman’s Co-op – located on the Plaza roundabout on Yamba Road, this is a great place to pick up some fresh seafood, or cooked takeaway options, on your way into town. The dining area overlooks the water, where friendly, but hungry, pelicans can often be seen waiting for the leftovers to be thrown their way.
Yamba Fishos – located on the corner of Coldstream and Main, you can often spot the line before spot the sign! Daily menus offer the freshest catch, and the long list of cooked options mean there’s something for everyone. This is a popular choice in the heart of town.
Do as the locals do…. Grab a kilo of fresh king prawns (or schoolies if you prefer the sweeter option and have the patience to peel them!), find yourself a bench with a view and enjoy.
Many of the local cafes and restaurants feature fresh seafood on their menu, usually sourced locally and season depending. For more places to eat and drink head over here to read more.
Which beach is THE BEST?
Woah, you’re really spoilt for choice with this one!
First things first… do you have a surfboard? Boogieboard? Beach umbrella? If not, don’t stress, pop into reception and we can arrange these for you.
Now, let’s head to the beach. We aren’t meant to have favourites, but Pippi Beach and Main Beach are our top picks (and not just because they’re on our doorstep).
Here’s our cheat sheet to find your favourite.
Pippi – stretches as far as the eye can see so you can be as secluded as you desire. South Pippi is also suitable for dogs so f making furry friends is your things, this is where you’ll find them!
Main Beach – Kiosk café tick. Surf Club tick. Ocean Pool tick. This beach has it all.
Whiting Beach – great for paddleboarding and shallower water. This is where the river meets the big open ocean.
Convent Beach – secluded and secret-ish. That’s all we’ll say about that.
Angourie also has its fair share of amazing beaches, from Spooky to Green Point and the famous Blue and Green Pools. Insta-worthy locations that don’t need a filter.
I want to shop ‘til I drop… Are there markets or local shops I should check out?
Absolutely, and unlike larger tourist destinations filled with chain stores, Yamba still feels authentic and community-focused. Beyond the beaches, Yamba has a strong local community feel, with weekly farmers markets, riverside community markets, boutique fashion stores, surf shops, and locally owned businesses scattered throughout town. Shopping locally is a great way to support the people who make Yamba such a special place to visit so feel free to spend up a storm.
Yamba Famers and Producers Market - One of the most popular markets in town, the famrers market is held every Wednesday morning from 7am to 11am at Whiting Beach Car Park. The market is known for its fresh local produce, artisan foods, baked goods, coffee, flowers, and handmade products sourced from the Clarence Valley and Northern Rivers. It’s the perfect spot to grab breakfast, stock up on picnic supplies, or simply enjoy a slow morning by the water.
Set right along the Clarence River, the Yamba River Markets are a great way to spend every fourth Sunday. This busy market features local arts and crafts, handmade jewellery, fresh produce, plants, food stalls, clothing, food trucks and live music.
Yamba’s town centre is filled with small locally owned boutiques and surf stores that
perfectly match the town’s relaxed beach vibe. Exploring the main streets is one of the easiest and most enjoyable things to do in Yamba, especially if you enjoy discovering unique local businesses. Ask our team what their favourite store is and watch as they battle it out!
Will someone please think of the children! What can they do?
We know how important it is to keep those little hands and feet busy, and as parents ourselves, we have a long list of kid friendly activities ready to go.
Aside from the obvious beach hangs and shell hunting, you’ll find a few playgrounds and sports fields around town, as well as a legendary skate park. Here’s a few favourites as voted for by the Sands Team Little Ones.
Yamba Skate Park – With a large clover bowl as the centre pieces, this upgraded skate park as areas suitable for beginner, intermediate and experienced shredders. Equipped with seating for spectators, you can scroll form the sidelines or witness some epic moves.
Yamba Bowlo – more than just a bowling club. Featuring 10 Pin bowling, activity centre for small humans and mini golf, you can spend a day here and still have time for the meat raffles in the evening!
Yamba Cinema – A Yamba Icon. We don’t share popcorn though. Everyone gets their own!
Playgrounds – Word on the street is Lions Park (near skate park) and William Ager Park (top end of Pippi Beach) are the 2 most requested hangs. Lions for the zip line and epic climbing frame and Ager for the views! Both have picnic facilities so you can take lunch or snack your way through all the “Push me on the swing” pleas.
Why do people come back to Yamba time and time again?
It’s hard to explain until you visit. Yamba has a slower pace, beautiful scenery, friendly locals, and that classic beach-town feeling that’s becoming harder to find. People come for the beaches and sunshine, but they return for the atmosphere and the feeling of being home away from home. You’ll make friends with the local café owner, be on first name terms with the meat raffle ticket seller and name your first-born Pippi because you love it so much! Trust us!
Our team are always happy to answer questions and help you plan your perfect trip. We want you to fall in love with Yamba as much as we have, so drop us an email or give us a call if there is anything we can do to help make your holiday the one your deserve.
